Over Assata Shakur

Assata Olugbala Shakur (geboren JoAnne Deborah Chesimard, 16 juli 1947) is een voormalig lid van de Black Liberation Army (BLA), die werd veroordeeld voor de moord met voorbedachten rade op politieagent Werner Foerster tijdens een vuurgevecht op de New Jersey Turnpike in 1973.

Terwijl ze een levenslange gevangenisstraf uitzat voor moord, ontsnapte ze in 1979 uit de Clinton Correctional Facility for Women. Ze dook in 1984 op in Cuba, waar ze politiek asiel kreeg. Shakur woont sindsdien in Cuba, ondanks pogingen van de Amerikaanse regering om haar terug te krijgen.
Ze staat sinds 2013 op de FBI Most Wanted Terrorists - lijst als Joanne Deborah Chesimard en is de eerste vrouw die aan deze lijst werd toegevoegd.
